In addition to the strictly blind accessible products on the other pages, there are also several existing products that can, with some modification be adapted for use with blind and visually impaired products.
Apple iPad
There is a growing trend in schools to provide content via a mobile platform. In response to this, teachers of the visually impaired have started developing ways to use the built-in accessibility software to include the students they serve with this dominating technology. All iOS based devices (including Macs) have this same capacity. This device can be connected, via Bluetooth, to a refreshable braille display. Windows 8 based tablets
Windows has had builtin accessibility features and their newest OS is no exception. As with earlier versions of windows, it should be possible to connect a refreshable braille display to this device via Bluetooth. Math Manipulates
Like the anatomy kits, they are available in a variety of places. |
Android Based Tablets
Like the iPad these devices have built-in accessibility options that make this device functional for the blind or visually impaired student. Also, the Braille Plus 18 is built off of the Android operating system. This device can be connected, via Bluetooth, to a refreshable braille display. Human anatomy kits
Kits, such as the one pictured, are available from a variety of sources. These hands-on learning devices can be very useful and are widely available. Most schools have a few models such as these (or others), but if not, they can be purchased from a variety of places including Amazon, Target, and Wal-Mart. As well as education stores. |
